Reflection Statement

I wanted to communicate the idea of open space with my three pieces. In the future, I think I need to plan ahead more in the sense of materials. My original ideas for these did not work out because of this. However, I am proud of my innovation.

Goodnight, not goodbye

Artist Statement:

This Sculpture reflects a memory from the summer camp I've gone to for eight years. At the end of each week on Friday, we have a night called "Council Fire". This is where we come together, build a fire in the lodge, trade rocks full of "camp magic" and hug as a way to say goodnight, not goodbye. Clay was used to mimicking the density and feeling of a rock and twisted together to represent a hug. With that, I painted one side red not only to represent the fire made but the loving energy that night holds as well. The other side is painted black since the ceremony is held at night and references the coals of the fire once it is put out, which signifies the end of that session.

Reflection Statement

Sculpture #1

The first ceramic sculpture is an ode to a group commonly known as "The itty-bitty titty Committee". This refers to women who have smaller breasts, which I replaced and represented with the use of bumble bees, or, in bra size terms, B-cups. I wanted to focus on this group because I feel they are often overlooked amongst society. This being the case, I made my figure with no face and minimal detail. I grew up thinking it was a bad thing to be a part of this category when in fact it is not. You should be proud of your bumble bees. All in all, in the future, I would like to explore shaping techniques when it comes to clay, as this was my first time working with it. I wish it came out a little smoother all around.

My goal for the second sculpture is to reflect back on one's inner child. Growing up I bet a lot of us would play mermaids in the pool with our friends. My intention for this piece was to remind you that even as we grow older, it is okay to still listen to our inner child. I then incorporated seashells because they have been said to symbolize the journey of life and the uniqueness of a person. When creating this piece, I allowed myself to play around with the clay until I found inspiration. In a way, I let my inner child take the wheel, which I feel I should do more often when I feel creatively stuck in the future.

A Natural History of The Senses Relief Sculpture

Artist Statement

This sculpture explores the idea of something being shocking to the eye, yet pleasant to the nose. This is similar to the way the scent of violets is shocking to our sense of smell, yet we still find them desirable. To express this, I decided to conquer my fear of many small holes and/or dots (trypophobia) and make it desirable by making the piece smell of lavender.
